All your household wastewater from the kitchen, bathroom, laundry and toilets will be collected and treated into safe, clean and odourless recycled water for re-use around your property or regularly pumped away.

If your property is not connected to mains sewer, you will need an on-site wastewater treatment system. All your household wastewater, from black water to grey water, will be collected and treated into safe, clean and odourless recycled water for re-use around your property. This is what is meant by 'on-site'.

Some components are common to all on-site systems, others depend on your site conditions and there are also different levels of treatment. Choosing the right wastewater treatment system for your property can be quite complex. However time spent carefully considering the options and getting an understanding of the basics in the beginning should prove valuable given the long term implications of such a decision.

To ensure you choose a system which actually adds value to your home rather than causing you future headaches there are a number of questions you should try to have answered before you even look for a system
.
  • Can I have a wastewater system on my property?

  • Can I upgrade my current wastewater system or do I require a new system?

  • What local council and state regulations do I have to comply with before I can install a new system or modify my existing one?

  • What are the limitations of my properties site soils, buffer zones and topographical features?

  • What do I wish to do with the wastewater once it is treated, and is that possible with my property?
Most of these can be answered by a Wastewater Management Assessment and Design Report, or Wastewater Report. These are sometimes incorrectly referred to as a geotech report. Almost all councils require a Wastewater Report before approval is given, however some councils have development control plans that stipulate their requirements. It is always a good idea to contact your local council because each council has its own rules and regulations.

It is worth noting that although we do represent a handful of brands this in no way affects the independence of our report writing. We only recommend systems that fit your specific conditions, and do not try and lock you into the brands we represent. No one brand can offer a system that covers all the variables and as such unlike others we offer a range of different systems while keeping our reports unspecific to allow you more choice. In some situations though limitations of the property itself can dictate very specific needs and in these cases we would advise you with what we think would be the best option.
Kerry Flanagan Wastewater can provide you with a detailed Wastewater Report that is actually worth the paper it is written on.

With our years of experience we have seen that it pays to have a report commissioned by someone who works within the wastewater industry and knows wastewater, namely us!

Otherwise you could be paying for a report that needs to be amended again and again to gain approval by Council, wasting your time and money.
Feel free to contact us to arrange a site assessment, create a Wastewater Report or review your current report. We can guide you through council's approval process, or work with them on your behalf. Once you have your Wastewater Report you will have a clearer understanding of what treatment systems and types of land application would be applicable to your property.
When looking at the options that fit within your Wastewater Report there are a few questions to consider before committing to a system...
  • Does my Wastewater Report give me options for different systems, or has the report writer limited my choices with a specific brand name?

  • What is my budget, and is a lower upfront cost, although very appealing, just going to end up costing me more in the long run?

  • What are the ongoing costs associated with the system and is it reliable? Eg. Servicing, Maintenance and Power Consumption over the life of the system? - The key here is how energy efficient is the system and what are the chances of needing frequent repairs?

  • How sustainable is the system? Is it environmentally friendly?

  • Can you safely recycle the treated effluent around your garden where children or companion animals might be playing?

  • Are you limited by the type of land application the treatment system uses?

  • How will the system look once it is installed? - Will it take away from the natural beauty of your garden?

  • Size and bulk of tanks to install - If the system is made up of multiple tanks or is very bulky this may reflect in a more expensive and difficult installation, not to mention, disruption to your garden.

  • Are there service agents in the area and what is their quality of service like?

  • Does the manufacturer offer any guarantee or warranty?

  • What do you know about the system or its manufacturer? Does it have a proven track record or does it have a history of problems?

  • What does the internet and not just the manufacturers website say about the system?

  • What is the treatment level of the system in terms of effluent quality and will it be able to produce these levels over time?

  • The mechanics of the system - Is the treatment process overly complex with many moving parts causing potential breakdown issues? Are the internal parts high quality or do they reflect the cheaper upfront cost?
Over the years we have worked with many different brands from Australia and abroad. We are confident that the brands that we now choose to represent are the best the world has to offer. Our focus is long term value for money, high quality parts and pumps, superior levels of treatment, footprint, serviceability, safety, reliability, sustainability and customer support.. to name just a few!
